Rebuilding With Purpose
I was raised by a single mother, although I had my father in my life. That would be difficult for me because I felt torn between two homes. After high school, I became a first-generation college student after entering Stockton University (formerly Stockton State College). I had the unique experience to attend college before graduating high school; entering Stockton as a student in the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program on a Sunday in June and then graduate on Monday from high school. EOF is for first generation students, offering financial assistance through grants and mentor them during their college experience by living on campus for six weeks. Students have the opportunity to earn college credits before their fall semester. I learned many valuable tools from EOF and developed bonds that would last a lifetime.
After graduation, I would later become a single mother. I raised my daughter with the help of my family and village while working as a Social Worker for over 25 years. I wanted my daughter to have the opportunities in life I was not afforded as a child. I was not taught about financial literacy at home; nor was this taught in schools. When my daughter went to college, I could not co-sign for her loans. Now my past decisions were affecting her life. That needed to change. All the while I was helping others, I was neglecting myself. I earned my Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009. Looking forward to retiring, I now have the ability to continue to help others learn about financial literacy. My passion continues, help others with their finances and build a financial legacy.
